HTMC Hike Listings Updated

In an effort to help clarify our hikes, the HTMC website hike listings have been updated to include more detailed information. This change was made after a variety of questions were raised about the HTMC rating system; novice, intermediate and advanced. HTMC realizes that the interpretation of the hike ratings can vary from person to person.  We hope that providing more information about the hikes will help our members and guests to have a better understanding of the trail. Our disclaimer and waiver section on the website has also been updated accordingly. If you have any feedback feel free to reach out to hike@htmc1910.org

The following are the new categories you will see in the 4th quarter hike listings:

Hike Description: brief description of the hike such as: ridge, valley, contour, level, roller-coaster, steep ups & downs, multiple stream crossings, garden stroll, hike distance, or a combination thereof, etc.

Elevation Gain: the total amount of elevation covered (including ups and downs) for the entire hike.

Trail Conditions: list of trail terrain such as: drop-offs, narrow ridges, stream crossings, slippery sections, muddy, lots of roots or rocks, uncleared, tall itchy grass, mosquitos, ropes, steep ups and downs, dry stream bed hike, road walk, new trail, sun exposure, etc.

Trail Features: list of unique features such as: tunnels, swimming holes, heiau, hieroglyphics, great windward or leeward views, tallest point on the island (or Ko’olaus), historic trail, waterfall, nature/snail preserve, botanical garden, historic water ditch, phallic rock, etc.

Trail Route: out and back vs. loop trail.

Moku & Ahupua’a: Moku (district) & Ahupua’a (generally watershed units).

Hawaiian Native Plants: Native plants are either endemic (found only in the Hawaiian Islands), or indigenous (occurring naturally in Hawaii and other locations).

Hawaiian Name & Meaning: ‘Olelo Hawai’i translation of trail name.

Interesting Cultural or Historic Note: short myths, legends, stories or historic information about the trail.
