Last Chance For The Haiku Stairs
Rumor has it that the Board of Water Supply is now preparing an environmental impact statement as a first step to demolishing the Haiku Stairs. Our last newsletter reported that things did not look good for survival of the stairs, and the outlook has worsened. This may be the last chance we have to urge the mayor and the city council to preserve the stairs as a priceless asset for future generations. Following is a history of the stairs, compiled by John Flanagan. With your help, we may still be able to see that their history does not end here.
