Wili Lei Making Workshop with Myrtle Wong & Friends

Apr 29, 2023

Join HTMC member Myrtle Wong and friends for a Wili Lei Making Workshop just in time for Lei Day! Although people often refer to the head lei as a “haku,” the style where flowers are wound for a head lei is called Wili.

Please bring your own lei making materials which include flowers, greenery and raffia.  There are so many kinds of flowers that you can incorporate into head lei’s, the main criteria is that they are able to last, select a good size flower that has a good stem to attach it firmly when making the lei. If needed, raffia will be provided, although a small fee may apply.

If you would like to go hiking to collect flowers you can find native ferns and Aalii.  I use to use Ohia, but I no longer use it because of Rapid Ohia Death (ROD).  Flowers that grow in your yard like; bougainvillea, cup and saucer, parrot heliconia and many others work well also. And  if people don’t want to search the trail, their yards or neighborhoods, they can always buy a mixed bouquet from Foodland, Safeway, Sam’s club, Costco or Whole Foods and use those flowers. Baby’s breath is a nice addition which is sold at some of the stores mentioned. When stored properly most of the flowers will hold until May Day.

This event is FULL. Reservations are required to attend this event.  CLICK HERE to be on the waitlist for this event. Mahalo! Because we need daylight to make the lei’s this event will start at 4pm.

HTMC events are open to non-members and guests, please CLICK HERE to pay the $5 clubhouse usage fee. Mahalo!
