Life at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility

Oct 12, 2024

Join Tony and Callie Matulonis and learn about the telescopes on Maunakea, the astronomy taking place, and some of the most memorable discoveries. With a combined 40+ years of experience on Maunakea, Tony and Callie will share what led them to the summit and what a typical night at the telescope looks like. A “star tour” on the HTMC lawn shall commence afterwards barring any bad weather.

HTMC Member Tony Matulonis was inspired by his professor Dr. Joe Ciotti to follow his passion for astronomy on Maunakea while attending Windward Community College and working at the Hawaii Medical Library in Honolulu. He graduated from UH Hilo with a Bachelors of Science in Astronomy in 2002, pursued a career at Gemini Observatory as a Science Operations Specialist for 10 years, and has dedicated the past 11 years to telescope operations at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF).

Callie Matulonis has been working on Maunakea since 2004 holding a variety of positions from outreach to operations at several different observatories. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Communications and Natural Science with a Minor in Astronomy from the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 2007. She then earned a Masters in Education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Educational Technology. She is currently a Research Associate at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility.
