Kai Piha: Diamond Head Makai: Film Night

Join Hawai‘i filmmaker Ann Marie Kirk and with historian and surfer John R. Kukeakalani Clark as they present their film project: Kai Piha: Diamond Head Makai. This documentary film first aired on PBS Hawai’i in January 2025. It explores the amazing history of the beaches, surf breaks and shoreline of the Diamond Head area through research into the history of place names, mo’olelo (stories) and historical documents.

Ann Marie Nalani Kirk is a lifelong resident of Maunalua, O’ahu, a Graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy, Kapiolan’i Community College with an BA and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa BA in Film and Mythology and a MA in Pacific Island Studies. She has been working in film and digital storytelling for over 30 years and is an award-winning filmmaker. One of her projects is Maunalua.net, an interactive website with a map of Maunalua area with links to historic images, oral histories, stories, videos, and more. John R. Kukeakalani Clark  grew up in a home near Diamond Head and spent his free time surfing the breaks nearby. He is a Punahou High School graduate and a University of Hawaii grad. Clark has been a soldier, lifeguard, firefighter, writer, and planning consultant. With degrees in fire science, Hawaiian studies, and public administration, he is the author of 11 books about Hawaii’s beaches, surf breaks, surf sports, and shoreline place names published by the U. H. Press. He believes in ka’ana ‘ike, “sharing knowledge.”

*Michael Tanenbaum will be performing. He is a composer/guitarist of contemplative instrumental music in the style of “Celtic Slack Key”. He creates visual guitar tapestries inspired by film music, Celtic melodies and the power of the land, light and ocean waters of the Hawaiian islands.
