Learn Oli with Kumu ‘Ilima

Learn about the Hawaiian tradition and practice of oli with Kumu Anita ‘Ilima Stern. Oli, or chant is a traditional form of expression performed without musical instruments that can be used as a blessing, prayer or ceremony. ‘Ilima will teach us two oli; Mele Kahea and Mele Komo from the book The Sacred Songs of the Hula published in 1909 by Nathaniel B. Emerson.
Mele Kahea is a chant asking permission to enter an area. It is from the Pele Legend. Hi’iaka arrives on Kaua’i and asks permission to enter but receives no reply. Mele Komo is the answer giving permission to enter.
Anita ‘Ilima Stern is a retired elementary school teacher who taught hula for 33 years. Students liked learning from her and liked the positive feedback they received. She lives in Kailua, O’ahu. HTMC was blessed to have ‘Ilima perform oli at the 2024 Holiday Luau and are grateful she is returning to teach.
