Schofield-Waikane
Overview
Schofield-Waikane is another long, rugged ridge hike in the central Ko’olau Range. It crosses country so wild it’s hard to believe you’re on populous O’ahu. The last third of the hike is along an open ridge with views in all directions. The trail ends at a scenic overlook of the windward coast. From the top you can see four undeveloped valleys. From left to right they are Kahana, Ka’a’awa, Hakipu’u, and Waikane. Pu’u Ohulehule is the peak dead ahead.”* The first two miles of the actual trail are in excellent shape thanks to the State Of Hawaii DLNR. Native plants on the upper portions. Lobelia can sometimes be seen downslope from the trail.
Directions
If you have a 4×4 vehicle, drive from the Ranger training area to the actual trailhead marked by a brown metal DLNR sign. Otherwise, continue on foot up the dirt/gravel road. Once you’ve reached the actual trailhead, hike the graded footpath to a junction with the Kaukonahua Stream Trail. Take the left fork and drop down for a refreshing dip or remain on the Schofield-Waikane Trail all the way to the Ko’olau summit.
