Pu’u O Kila
Overview
Directions
The hike starts at the end of the Kahana Valley Road. Hike through the locked gate to the left up the Board or Water Supply road to the water tank. Find the trail to the left of the tank and follow it to “four corners” where the concrete bunkers are located. Turn right and follow the trail a short way through the bamboo forest. Take the trail heading down to the left and cross the stream. There will be two more stream crossing before you find a trail heading up to the left. This trail travels along the ridge to the summit. The trail down from the summit is on the left near the makai side of the summit area. Take this steep trail down and continue along the ridge. You will see a wide flat area where you continue right , following the path. Once you intersect with the Nakoa trail, turn right and follow it to the dam. Cross the dam and take the road back to the trail head.
Hazards
Involves 4 stream crossings where flash floods are common during heavy rains in the valley or in the mountains above. The final climb to the summit and descent a from the summit are very steep with drops on both sides. Ropes placed there can break at any time so extreme caution should be used.
