Kamaile’unu
Overview
Kamaileunu Ridge is the most rugged hike on Oahu and contains the third highest peak. Views are what this hike is all about. From the terminus you can see Makaha Valley, Ohikilolo Ridge and Mt. Ka’ala. On the way up you experience sweeping vistas of the Waianae Range, Waianae and Lualualei valleys as well as most of the leeward coast.
Directions
Proceed on foot from Ala Akau to Kaulawaha Road. At the end of Kaulawaha continue straight toward Kamaileunu Ridge. Reach the front of the ridge just beyond Maiuu Road and look for a trail. Follow the trail ascending gradually along the ridge line over an abandoned metal irrigation ditch and an ancient Hawaiian heiau. Negotiate a long relatively level stretch. Ascend along a rock dike then climb steeply to a peak. Next, descend steeply to an ironwood grove and eventually contour along the Waianae Valley facing slope. Regain the crest of the ridge and travel on it to a steep drop-off which blocks further progress.
Hazards
The trail is rough and hot with steep and narrow sections
