Protecting Access, Protecting Trails: HTMC Social Media Policy Update

- by

HTMC updated its Social Media Policy to create a clearer, more consistent approach to sharing hike experiences online while helping protect the trails we care about. What’s Changing? The updated policy will apply to all social media platforms, including members’ personal accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Gaia, AllTrails, etc.) and the private HTMC Members Only Facebook Group.

As social media and GPS tracking apps continue to shape how people discover hikes, we recognize that online sharing can unintentionally contribute to increased trail use, environmental impacts, and rescues. Sensitive and unmanaged trails can quickly become overwhelmed when locations, routes, or destination images spread beyond their intended audience.

For many years, HTMC has maintained a no-post policy for non-state-managed trails and certain hikes conducted under special access agreements with private landowners. Historically, content from restricted hikes was permitted within the private HTMC Members Only Facebook Group because access was limited to members. However, we have come to recognize that posts shared in private spaces can still be redistributed beyond their intended original audience.

To reduce confusion and better protect sensitive trail information, the update applies a consistent standard across all social media platforms—including members’ personal accounts and the private HTMC Members Only Facebook Group.

The updated policy (CLICK HERE) encourages members to share thoughtfully and focuses on protecting unmanaged and sensitive trails. Members are strongly encouraged to only post from known State Trails and Na Ala Hele Trails and avoid sharing:

  • Summit or destination photos from unmanaged or sensitive trails
  • GPS tracks or route information
  • Specific views, locations, or identifying trail details

For hikes operating under special access agreements, additional no-post restrictions may apply and will be noted in the hike description and communicated by the Hike Coordinator.

This update is not intended to discourage members from sharing the joy of hiking. Rather, it reflects HTMC’s commitment to responsible hiking, trail stewardship, honoring landowner agreements, and preserving access to the places entrusted to our care. Violations may result in termination of HTMC membership and hike participation privileges.

Mahalo to our members for adhering to this policy which will help protect Hawai’i’s trails to ensure future generations can continue to enjoy them responsibly.
