2026 Koko Crater Botanical Garden Photo Walk

- by

On January 17, 2026, HTMC offered another photo walk with HTMC member and photography teacher Hawkins Biggins. A few of the early birds meet beforehand to photograph the sunrise at the Holona Blow Hole. Photography enthusiasts set off early in the morning on beautiful, cool, crisp, and clear January day to explore the art of photography at Koko Crater Botanical Garden in Kohelepelepe, Maunalua, Oahu.

Under the mostly bare plumeria grove, the group gathered to discuss the basics of smartphone photography settings; although iPhone’s dominated there was a handful of Android users. The group then wound its way counterclockwise along the two-mile loop stopping along the way. Our first stop was the Cactus Garden, where we shared some basic photo tips and practiced finding interesting compositions among the succulents—careful not to get too close to avoid their sharp thorns.

Next, we explored the Hawaiian Native Plant section and reviewed fundamental elements of composition. At this time of year, the ‘ohi‘a (yellow, red, and orange), native hibiscus (red and white), ‘ilima (orange and red), naupaka, alahe’e and ho‘awa were in bloom.

We continued along the pathway through the African Section, stopping under the giant ficus tree to study the light, marveling at the giant trunks and furry seed pods of the Baobab Trees and pondered at how to capture the humongous yellow fever tree. And the Palm Section was the perfect subject to consider ways to incorporate lines into our compositions. We wrapped up our visit at viewing the art installation “Ku’u Pua I Kohelepelepe,” by artist Ualani Davis (on view through 2028).

Pat assisted on the photo walk, sharing his technical knowledge and bringing along his 360° camera to capture a few scenes along the way. You can view his 360° images [here].

Participants were invited to share their three favorite images, which are featured below. Mahalo to everyone who joined the photo walk and to those who contributed their creative photos—what an impressive variety of work!
