Festive Holiday Wreaths: Myrtle Wong’s Workshop

- by

On Saturday November 11, 2023 HTMC Member and plant whisperer Myrtle Wong shared her talent for wreath making at the HTMC Clubhouse Event. Members and guests who attended brought flower & plant materials along with a wreath base and tools.  Wrapping, weaving, hot glueing, and wiring in their materials each participant made something completely unique. Below are some images Myrtle took at the event of the participants holding their wreaths. Read the photo captions for information about the plant materials they used. If you missed out this year, have no fear, Myrtle has volunteered to make the Wreath Making Workshop an annual HTMC November Event. Mahalo Myrtle!

The Workshop whet well and it is always interesting to see the creativity and enthusiasm in the participants. The materials I used in my wreath were Cook Pine
Juniper, Sandpaper flower, Silver button wood (light/silver leaves), pods from autograph tree (pods are stuffed with newspaper and dried to keep them open).           – Ruth (Mahalo to Ruth who helped Myrtle with this event)

I don’t remember the name if all the plants we used: ti leaves, song of India, song of Africa, Pele’s hair are the ones that come to my mind.  – Dominique & Jeff

My wreath is mostly covered with Koa and Christmas berries. It was my first time with HTMC and felt right away welcomed. I will look for more opportunities to participate in events and hikes with the club. I would like to become a friend and eventually a member of HTMC. – Bibiana

Autograph seed pods, silver button leaves, peel’s hair, baby’s breath and a very bright fuchsia flower for accent. Myrtle is so delightful and helpful. Everyone was very friendly. – Connie

I used ti, cook pine needles, hale koa seed pods, lipstick seed pods and a variety of other seed pods found on trails.  I learned some stuff while making this. Thank you for making this happen! – Bobbie

My wreath materials: Juniper, Leather Leaf Ficus, Star of India and a perfectly beautiful ribbon from Myrtle that made my wreath sing. A great day when so much fun and creativity was shared by all! Thank you Myrtle. – Sabra

Super-fun wreath-making workshop! It was my first one ever, and I was relieved that it came out ok. I appreciated the support and helpful hints from everyone, and the materials they brought to share. Now as I walk through the neighborhood, I’m on the lookout for material I can use for my Christmas wreath (the one I made was for fall/Halloween). – Judith

This is my first time ever making a wreath and I am an HTMC life member.  Materials used are un-named; I grabbed whatever was within easy reach.  Many thanks to Myrtle, Ruth and fellow participants who advised me “not to quit my day job.” I am Threatening to return next year!  – Nellie
