Awesome July Clubhouse Workday!
On Saturday July 20th, 23 hard-working HTMC members volunteered for the bi-monthly clubhouse workday, coordinated by Property Maintenance Committee Chair John Braum. Old-timers and brand new members alike donned work clothes and gloves to spruce up the clubhouse. It was a super productive day, and those who shared in the efforts felt the spirit of camaraderie and created lasting memories.
Key projects included carpentry and yard work. A small crew demolished the makai stair landing, replaced rotten support beams, and added plywood to create a secure landing and roof over the laundry area. Clubhouse Resident Caretaker Colleen Soares shared her wish list for yard work and we dove in! Armed with weed whackers, hedge trimmers and hand tools, weeding the yard, others pruned the naupaka hedge and crown flower bushes, and lopped the palm trees and the Hau tree above the arbor. The last of the Kukui nut tree was removed to prevent damage to the neighbors’ wall and the clubhouse. Six truck loads of green waste were hauled by Mike, Andree and David to the Waimanalo Convenience Center. Another truckload of construction debris from the ongoing stair replacement project was taken to Kapaa Transfer Station. Meanwhile, Justin Ohara peeled and cut longan and other yummy fruit to make his delicious fruit salad – which proved to be a refreshing, much-appreciated treat on a warm summer day!
An impressive list of tools utilized includes: loppers, sickles, hand saws, clippers, rakes, electric hedge trimmer, weed whacker, leaf blower, chainsaw, hammers, mallets, crowbars, electric drills, screw gun, sawsall, jigsaw, Miter saw, and paint brushes.
Everyone kept looking around in amazement and with a sense of gratitude towards all the members who showed up to help. The question was raised many times: How did we manage to have such a great turnout? For me, volunteering for clubhouse workdays is always a highlight. As we all gather together in this awesome hiking community to donate our time, energy and skills for a common cause, it brings to mind the inspiring tradition of Amish barn building.
