HTMC Code of Conduct

The code of conduct is a set of ethical behavior that we expect our members and guests to follow. The Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club (HTMC) is committed to providing a safe, enjoyable, and welcoming environment for all club members and guests (also referred to as “participant” or “participants”). This Code of Conduct applies to all HTMC hikes and events, including those sponsored by other organizations but held in conjunction with HTMC, in public or private facilities. For additional required rules of behavior, please see our hiking policies and procedures.  See here for important hike safety guidelines.

Expected Behavior

  1. Follow the golden rule: treat others the way you would want to be treated.
  2. Adhere to the Club’s Hiking Policies and Procedures
  3. Leave no trace: do not leave anything behind, biodegradable or not.
  4. Follow the hike coordinators’ instructions; including staying on the trail and following pink ribbons.
  5. Be respectful of the plants and animals.
  6. Create a friendly atmosphere on the trail. Say hello or offer a simple head nod and smile.
  7. Be considerate and respectful to your fellow participants. When hiking, step aside to let faster hikers pass and give uphill hikers the right of way.
  8. Not engage in unacceptable behavior.
  9. Be respectful of others’ property including the clubhouse premises.
  10. Many of our hikes begin in residential neighborhoods. Please be quiet (especially in the mornings) and courteous to residents. Always park legally: park at least 4 feet from the “end slopes” (i.e., from the high point of the sloping edge) of a driveway; 10 feet from a fire hydrant; 30 feet from a stop sign; and 20 feet from a crosswalk.
  11. Alert the hike coordinator, event organizer or any club officer/director if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or someone experiencing an uncomfortable situation. Notify the hike coordinator or a club officer/director of any unacceptable behavior.
  12. If experiencing or witnessing behavior that constitutes an immediate or serious threat to personal or public safety contact 911.

Unacceptable Behavior

  1. Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form will not be tolerated. Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to physical or verbal abuse, bullying, threatening or stalking any member or guest, or making offensive or derogatory comments to a participant regarding a participant’s gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, or national origin. Pursuing a relationship that makes another feel uncomfortable. The victim of unacceptable behavior has the right to ask or insist that the person responsible for such behavior immediately stop such behavior and the perpetrator shall immediately respect the victims wishes.
  2. Misrepresenting yourself as an agent or spokesperson for HTMC when you are not authorized to do so, or when you are simply expressing your own opinion.

Consequences

  • Anyone requested to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately. Failure to comply with the Code of Conduct may result in the offending party being asked to leave the event or hike and club officers/directors and hike coordinators may take action deemed necessary to enforce the Code. Violations of the HTMC Code of Conduct may lead to suspension or expulsion from the Club.
