Wailupe Valley

3 miles / Novice / Valley / Aina Haina

This hike starts on the main Wailupe Valley trail, eventually going through bamboo and reaching a serene cook pine forest with a peekaboo view of the ocean. Returning from the pine forest the trail descends onto mountain bike trails that are no longer in use by bikers. The bike trails meanders along a stream bed through a tranquil forest before returning to the main valley trail.*

A $5 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over.

Elevation Gain: 863 feet.

Trail Conditions: roots, stream crossings (usually dry), mosquitos, muddy and slippery when wet.

Trail Features: old rock structures, entangled hau trees, cook pine and bamboo forest, foraging – avocados, mango, kukui nuts.

Trail Route: lollipop loop.

Native Flora & Fauna: elepaio breeding grounds and native plant restoration area.

Moku & Ahupua’a: Kona & Waikiki.

Hawaiian Name & Meaning: Wailupe = kite water (kites were only flown in prescribed places; Wailupe was one of them).

HTMC has a no-post social media (including GPS trail apps) hike policy on all trails that are not state trails in order to protect the trails from being “loved to death” and to discourage hikers from going on hikes for which they are not prepared or are beyond their experience level.
