Tantalus Ramble

6 miles / Intermediate / Steep-valley / Tantalus

This hike is a true ramble off the beaten track involving uneven terrain with lots of ups and downs (some fairly steep but not life threatening). A real adventure into the uncharted. Spikes and poles are recommended, if you have them. This hike is NOT a causal stroll through the woods. Following ribbons will be critical or, as the lyrics of the Kingston Trio song “MTA” goes: “He rides forever through the streets of Boston, he’s the man who never returned.”

A $5 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over.

Trail Conditions: Muddy and slippery with mosquitos when wet.

Trail Features: thick forest with large trees and vines, fruit trees when in season.

Trail Route: Loop.

Moku & Ahupua’a: Kona & Honolulu

Historic Information: Tantalus was named by the students of Punahou School who used to hike in the area after the mythological Greek whose eternal punishment in Hades was to be frustrated and tempted by food and water receding out of his reach, unable to quench his thirst or hunger.
