Hele Laule’a o Manoa

4.8 miles / Intermediate / Ridge, Valley / Manoa

This hike starts out at popular Manoa Falls Trail, where we stop to admire the beautiful falls feeding the Waihi Stream. We soon continue our journey along a beautiful and less travelled trail with grand vistas of Manoa Valley and the ocean. Navigating some impressive roots leading to a ridge we reach a windy overlook with sweeping views over Nu’uanu Valley. We carefully trace our steps back to find a lunch spot of our liking before again braving the
Manoa Falls Trail to return to our starting point.

Cumulative Elevation Gain: 1,452 ft

Trail Conditions: Muddy, roots.

Trail Features: Tall waterfall (no swimming), grand vistas of Manoa and Nu’uanu valleys, blue marble trees.

Trail Route: Out and back

Moku & Ahupua’a: Kona & Honolulu

Hawaiian Name Meaning: Manoa literally means vast, and hele = hike
laule’a = friendship – so literally “the friendship hike of Manoa”

Historic Information: In 1895, Robert Wilcox and his band of royal loyalists, after their failed attempt to restore Queen Lili’uoakalani to the throne, made a stand here against their republican pursuers. Overpowered, Wilcox and others fled across the divide to Nu’uanu Valley.
