Lanipo

6.4 miles / Intermediate / Ridge / Kaimuki

This up and down hike provides an exhilarating workout along a scenic ridge with a good variety of native vegetation. The last section features views of a volcanic crater, a waterfall, and the windward coast.

A $5 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over.

Elevation Gain: 2,453

Trail Conditions: Exposed roller coaster ridge trail, narrow with steep drop offs at places, muddy and slippery when wet, when conditions are hot and humid carry extra water.

Trail Features: Scenic views into Ka’au crater and windward Oahu.

Trail Route: Out and back

Native Plants: Ohia Lehua, ‘Ilima, Koa, Uki.

Hawaiian Name Meaning: Lanipo = dense, dark, lush as of plants or rain.

Historic Information: A historic Hawai’ian trail, Mau’umae ridge started hosting HTMC maintenance and hike outings in the 1910s. Over the years, the hike was named Wilhemina Rise, Palolo Hill or Wai’alae Ridge but now it is referred to as Lanipo even though the summit is reached at Kainawa’anui (big canoe procession), and Lanipo summit is some way south along the KST.
