Allow at least 3 days for Hawaii Reserves to send you your permit.

Long contour trail to the Ko’olau summit. A short ways in, a side trail to the right leads down to a stream & pool. The trail ends at the junction of the Ko’olau Summit and Kawailoa Trails. A nearby concrete helipad marks the top with views of both windward and leeward shores.

A $5 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over.

Cumulative Elevation Gain: 4,407 ft

Trail Conditions: Long Trail, overgrown, a steep dropoff.

Trail Features: Scenic Views, side trail leads to swimming hole and waterfall.

Native Plants: naupaka kuahiwi, loulu palm, ohia lehua, uki

Moku & Ahupua’a: Ko’olauloa & La’ie Wai

Hawaiian Name Meaning: La’ie literally means leaf of the ‘ie (vine), shortened from lau’ie.

Historic Information: Legendary Malaekahana gave birth to a daughter which she hid under water (or in a place only accessible through water), hence the girl is known as La’ie i ka wai (La’ie in the water).

Permissions and Permits

Hawaii Reserves requires each person who participates in a hike or trail maintenance on their land to have a permit. To obtain the permit, do the following:

  1. Complete the Hiking Permit form at https://www.hrihelp.com/hiking-camping.
  2. Check either Laie Falls Trails or Koloa Gulch Trails (depending on the hike/clearing you would like to attend).
  3. After submitting the form, make a note of permit validity. You will not receive a permit document or email confirmation from Hawaiian Reserves.
