Kokocrater Botanical Garden

2 miles / Novice / Valley, Foothill / Hawaii Kai

This hike is a photo walk and the pace will be slow in order to stop often along the way to talk about different photography techniques to capture botanicals. The loop from the parking lot is about 2 miles; we will stop at the cactus garden, the Hawaiian section and continue through the tropical species from the Americas and Africa.

Elevation Gain: 300ft.

Trail Conditions: rocky uneven surfaces, slippery when wet.

Trail Features: Botanical garden with a large variety of plants and trees from around the world, walk inside this volcanic cinder/ash cone with views looking up at the crater rim and out towards Kamehame Ridge.

Trail Route: Lolipop Loop.

Native Plants: native plant garden featuring wiliwili, lama, koa, pua kala, alahe’e, etc . . .

Moku & Ahupua’a: Ko’olau poko & Waimanalo.

Hawaiian Name Meaning: Kohelepelpe – labia minora

Hawaiian Legend: Kamapua’a, a Hawaiian demigod, attacked Pele in Puna on the Big Island of Hawai’i. The two shared a romantically fickle relationship. Pele’s sister Kapo sent her feminine charm to lure Kamapua’a. He followed it to Koko Head, where it left an imprint, and then it flew off to Kalihi.
