Kealia

8 miles / Intermediate / Graded-hillside / Mokuleia

We always switchback up the pali, but at the top are numerous possible routes. We’ll probobally trek to the Makua Valley rim. Whichever one we take this year, count on some road walking, trail hiking, good views, and plenty of ups and downs.

A $5 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over.

Elevation Gain: 2,980 ft

Trail Conditions: Graded trail to jeep road with steep sections

Trail Features: Scenic views of North Shore, windward Makua valley

Trail Route: Lolipop Loop

Native Plants: Lonomea, Noni, Alahe’e, Wiliwili, ‘A’ali’i

Moku & Ahupua’a: Waialua & Kealia

Hawaiian Name Meaning: Kealia, lit. salt encrustation

Historic Information: In 1934 the Civilian Conservation Corps blasted a switchback trail up the pali. A CCC worker carved his initials into a rock past the eleventh switchback. HTMC first scheduled the new trail in February 1935.
