Kawa’ewa’e

4.4 miles / Intermediate / Ridge / Kaneohe

Our route starts in the pleasant Friendship Gardens in residential Kane’ohe, but quickly moves beyond the “novice” category. The views are great, and provide a different perspective on Kane’ohe and the bay. Also known as Oneawa Hills.*

Elevation Gain: 1,600 ft.

Trail Conditions:

Trail Features: Views of Kailua, Kane’ohe, and Quarry.

Trail Route: Out and back.

Native Plants:

Moku & Ahupua’a: Ko’olau poko & Kane’ohe.

Hawaiian Name Meaning:  A wa’ewa’e is a head fisherman in charge of the ku’ula (stone gods used to attract fish).

Historic Information: Ka-wa’ewa’e was a 12-century heiau in Kane’ohe. O’ahu chief Olopana brought Kama-pua’a there to be sacrificed, but he escaped (source Fornander).
