Trail Name Origin: The bay rum tree (Pimenta racemosa) is also known as bay oil tree, bay tree, West Indian bay, wild cilliment, and wild cinnamon.  Related to the allspice tree, if you crush its leaves it gives off a ‘bay-rum’ odor with hints of cinnamon and clove, its leaves can produce essential oils with many medical uses. It is native to the Caribbean, Central and South America it is considered an invasive in Hawai’i as it can grown into dense forests that crowd out native species. The seeds are spread by birds that eat its fruit.

Historic Information: The government was eyeing Kamana Nui valley as a potential route for H3. The public rallied to document the rich history of the valley and ultimately saved it from development.
