When Action meets Science: “The Right Whale: Tales of Resilience and Hope”
Produced by Cheryl Dean and Nick Dean, The Right Whale is an unprecedented portrait of one of the ocean’s most remarkable and imperiled giants. Filmed across the frigid sub-Antarctic waters south of New Zealand, the gulfs of Patagonia, Argentina, the southern coast of Australia, and the industrialized eastern seaboard of North America, it is the first film to bring together right whale stories from around the world.
There will be two special screenings of the documentary The Right Whale with producers Cheryl and Nick in attendance for post-film discussions on Friday February 27th at Patagonia Honolulu and on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at the HTMC Clubhouse.
As for the whale’s tale in Hawaii, we all know that the islands are a special place for the Humpback whale. Being a global species, human interference reduced their population by 95%. Today, the Humpback whale is in recovery and on its way of pre-whaling numbers. People and policy stepping up together to save the Humpback whale over the last 90 years or so proves that working together matters. However, many whale species, in particular regional species, remain endangered by human activity and continue to decline.

Their documentaries have earned international acclaim and been featured by the BBC, the UN World Wildlife Day Film Showcase, and Capitol Hill in DC. ?
In 2025 they founded Spindrift Images Foundation, a nonprofit using film, education, and strategic outreach to protect ocean wildlife and ecosystems, currently the North Atlantic right whale. They hope to inspire people to act in support of animal welfare, biodiversity, and wilderness conservation.
Cheryl and Nick’s newest documentary “The Right Whale” will be screened in February 2026 as part of “Whales Tales” hosted by the WHALE TRUST, a non-profit organization dedicated to scientific research and public awareness of whales and their environment. Based on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, the WHALE TRUST conducts and supports marine research and education programs around Maui and elsewhere throughout the Pacific Ocean.
Cheryl and Nick will visit The Gathering Place after the Valley Isle. On Oahu, Patagonia Honolulu will be screening “The Right Whale” documentary on Friday, February 27th at 7:30pm with Cheryl and Nick in attendance.
