Pia Valley with Protect & Preserve Hawaii
Overview
Join a team of dedicated volunteers who are restoring a valley that has been taken over by invasive plants that are threatening many remaining rare native plants. In 2018, Tyrone Montayre, an auto mechanic went to a public auction to buy a condo. Instead, he came home with 330 acres of conservation land! Initially he had no clue what to do with this land, but with the help of many he created Protect & Preserve Hawaii. The first volunteer event was in October 2020 (during COVID) and since then volunteers have cleared over 5.4 acres and planted over 9,300 native plants.
We will start the day with a short hike to the restoration area, an introduction to the site and history by Tyrone, and then chant a Hawaiian Ollie asking for permission to enter and work the land. Then we will teach how to recognize and remove invasive plants. In the process we will point out native plants and then end the event by planting native plants. After lunch, we will then take a short easy hike further up Pia Valley for some views of the area.
