Pu’u O Hulu

2 miles / Intermediate / Ridge / Maili

A steep, rocky scramble leads to several concrete bunkers where military observers sighted targets for the coastal artillery battery at Pu’u Kapolei. Return via the switchback trail once used by mules to haul construction material and supplies for the observation posts.

A $5 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over.

Elevation Gain: 700 ft.

Trail Conditions: Climbing Rocks, Cliffs, Steep Drop-offs, Exposure.

Trail Features: Scenic views, goats.

Trail Route: Loop.

Moku & Ahupua’a: Wai’anae & Wai’anae.

Hawaiian Name Meaning: Named for a chief, Hulu (story below).

Historic Information: Named for a chief, Hulu, who was in love with Ma’ili’ili, one of two twin sisters. Since he could not tell the sisters apart, a mo’o changed both sisters to mountains, and he still looks at them.
